U.S. ARMY 302ND MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 302nd Military Intelligence Battalion was a subordinate unit of the 205th Military Intelligence Brigade until that unit was inactivated in June 2007. While serving with the Brigade, the 302nd MI Battalion was awarded two Meritorious Unit Commendations, one for service between February 2003-February 2004 and a second for service between September 2005-September 2006. Interestingly, the two awards were initially announced on the same day, 15 August 2007, in consecutive Permanent Orders (Nos. 222-19 and 222-20).

The 302nd Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, more commonly called a unit crest and sometimes a DUI, was approved originally for the 302nd Communications Reconnaissance Battalion on 16 July 1956. It was redesignated for the 302nd Army Security Agency Battalion on 19 March 1957 before its use was assigned to the 318th U.S. Army Security Agency Battalion until 13 March 1975, when usage was revoked. When the insignia was given its current designation for the 302nd Military Intelligence Battalion on 19 October 1983, the symbolism was concurrently amended to reflect its wear by personnel in a Military Intelligence unit.

Teal and white are the colors used for a unit that is “branch immaterial,” or unassigned to a branch (as this unit was while serving as a Communications Reconnaissance Battalion). The organization’s wartime service as a Signal unit is denoted by the fox’s orange coat and the white of its eyes, while the unit’s Intelligence functions are symbolized by a censor’s black stamp on the fox’s mask. A single-warded key commemorates the organization’s first battle honor for the Normandy campaign of World War II and also alludes to the work of both Signal and Intelligence Battalions. Two stylized lighting flashes stand for the work of radio reconnaissance, while the collection of all five charges denote the five battle honors the organization and units in its lineage have accrued. "Loyalty Vigilance Pride" is the Battalion motto. (A charge is any object placed upon the field of the insignia, and there five in this insignia: two lightning flashes, one key, one fox, and one censor stamp on the fox's head.

G
uidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
